Fist to Five
Alignment Statement
A fist to five practice in the classroom is a type of formative assessment to observe and quickly assess student understanding. This practice allows the educator to visually observe which students may be struggling and which students understand a concept. It also allows students to assess their understanding of a concept.

Narrative Statement
I use this practice daily for a variety of different lessons, activities, and subjects. I can use it cross categorically and it can be used by all types of learners. In the middle and end of most of the lessons I teach, I use this as a marker of what students may understand or not understand. This allows me to change my instruction or pull a focus group for struggling learners. I can then meet the needs of all students and make sure that all students understand the material before they are summatively assessed.
