Fractions on a Number Line Lesson

Alignment Statement

This lesson was teaching fourth-grade students about sorting fractions on a number line. Using the state standards of comparing and understanding fraction values this lesson uses a number line to represent this concretely before moving onto abstract understandings of fractions. This one lesson was a part of a unit that focused on fractions and the goal was to start using representations of fractions and their values before thinking about them abstractly. In alignment with this standard, the goals of this lesson begin by building a foundation for a more complex understanding and application of fractions.

Narrative Statement

When creating lessons and educational experiences for students there is a goal in mind that is being guided by standards. Throughout units, each lesson builds upon the one previous and that's what this lesson does. I created a concrete representation of fractions for students to begin to quantify and understand the values of fractions by using a number line. As students get older their math curriculum will become more complex so I want to help build a concrete foundation for them now.
